Ivan was called to the Bar in 1993 and worked as an employed lawyer and in voluntary work before completing pupillage training in 1996.
He is an Assistant Coroner for Nottinghamshire, appointed in April 2013.
He was appointed to the Attorney General’s (Regional) Panel of Counsel to the Crown in 2007 and completed a 5-year term up to October 2012.
His principal areas of specialisation are Personal Injury, including all manner of serious claims, Employment, Clinical Negligence, Disease, Criminal Regulatory and Housing.
When not working Ivan’s interests include travel, music and film, tennis and occasional running, and trying to keep pace with his two young sons.
Ivan advises and represents both Claimants and Defendants and has extensive experience across a wide breadth of subject areas, including:
- Employers’ liability cases
- Road traffic and highway claims
- Liability of occupiers and landlords
- Criminal injury compensation claims
He has been involved in a broad range of medium to high value claims, representing at trials on liability and quantum and at joint settlement meetings and mediations.
He has also advised in clinical negligence cases, including incorrect or late diagnosis and negligently performed surgery, including dental cases.
Since 2006/7, following re-locating to the East Midlands, Ivan has spent approximately 30% of his professional time advising and representing Claimants and Respondents, including most Government Departments and Agencies and businesses of all sectors and sizes, across a broad range of employment law issues.
In recent years that work has included:
- Discrimination relating to sex, race, age and disability
- Unfair dismissal and redundancy issues
- ‘Whistle blowing’ cases
- Contractual disputes including the interpretation of restrictive practice
- Equal pay
- He has been involved in a number of 2-3 week-long hearings, involving complex issues of both fact and law
Recently, over a 9-day hearing, he successfully represented an employer defending multiple claims alleging disability discrimination, victimisation, harassment and failure to act following the making of alleged protected disclosures.

Inquests and Criminal Regulatory
Ivan has represented companies and individuals prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive and the Environment Agency (water pollution).
He has represented, at Employment Tribunal, a company’s appeal of an Environment Agency enforcement notice, following an accident at the company’s factory premises.
In the last 5 years he has regularly been involved in appeals against the imposition of Civil Penalties, following businesses’ alleged engagement of illegal migrant workers and appeals by employers relating to National Minimum Wage legislation enforcement.
He has regular involvement in the Inquest process, sitting as an Assistant Coroner since July 2013. He maintains an interest, especially, in complex cases involving state participation, including prison deaths. He represented the family of a man with mental health problems, fatally shot by police officers on Merseyside, during a 2-week jury inquest.
Ivan advises and represents Local Authorities, Housing Associations and individuals across a broad range of housing work:
- Possession, demotion, licensing and management under the Housing Acts
- Unlawful eviction
- Anti-social behaviour and neighbour nuisance
He has represented Local Authorities and individuals in appeals against allocation decisions around homelessness.
